Sabrina Carpenter Leads Alice in Wonderland Musical
Superstar Sabrina Carpenter is embarking on an exciting new venture, slated to star in and produce a musical film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's iconic Alice in Wonderland for Universal Pictures. This untitled project promises a fresh take on the beloved tale.
The creative reins for this adaptation will be held by Lorene Scafaria, whose previous directorial work includes the critically acclaimed crime film Hustlers, starring Jennifer Lopez. Scafaria is set to both write and direct this new Alice in Wonderland musical.
A powerhouse producer with a proven track record in musical theater and film, Marc Platt, will also be involved. Platt, known for his significant contributions to productions like Wicked on Broadway and its cinematic adaptation, is on board as a producer. Joining him are Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton, representing Alloy Entertainment, the production company behind popular series such as Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars.
Lewis Carroll's original Victorian narrative chronicles the adventures of Alice, a young girl who tumbles down a rabbit hole into a bizarre and whimsical realm populated by anthropomorphic creatures. This classic story has previously been brought to the screen, most notably as a celebrated 1951 Disney animated feature and a highly successful 2010 live-action rendition directed by Tim Burton, which featured Johnny Depp in the role of the Mad Hatter.
Details regarding Carpenter's specific role in the musical are still under wraps. However, it's understood that this project is deeply personal for the global pop sensation. Reports suggest Carpenter initiated discussions with the studio approximately a year ago, presenting a distinct vision and a comprehensive mood board. As the concept matured, producers were brought into the fold, followed by Scafaria's involvement.
Overseeing the project at Universal Pictures are Senior VP of Production Development Ryan Jones and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell. Katie McNicol will be shepherding the film from Marc Platt Productions.
Platt's extensive filmography spans a wide range of successful projects, from Legally Blonde to La La Land. His upcoming release includes Wicked: For Good, the second installment of the film adaptation of the musical, scheduled for theaters on November 21st.
Sabrina Carpenter recently garnered significant recognition with six nominations at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. Her accolades included nods for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for "Man's Best Friend," as well as Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video for "Manchild." Her acting portfolio includes roles in films like The Hate U Give and Emergency, and the television series Girl Meets World.
Lorene Scafaria's directing credits extend to the pilot and subsequent episodes of the HBO comedy series I Love LA, created by Rachel Sennott, which premiered on November 2nd. She also serves as an executive producer on this show. Her directorial work includes episodes of the acclaimed HBO drama Succession. Scafaria began her career as a screenwriter, contributing to films such as Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Her 2019 film Hustlers received widespread critical praise and earned Scafaria a nomination for Best Director from the Independent Spirit Awards.
